Journal Topic of the Week 4

Q. What language areas do you think you particularly want work on to be a well qualified English teacher? Stundents these days tend to really care their English teacher's pronunciation. They seem to believe that English teachers should pronounce just like a native speakers of English. What do you think about this belief? How would you react to this attitude (belief)?

First off, I would like to work on my writing skill the most to be a well-qualified English teacher. Writing, one of four skills of Language, seems to be undervalued in South Korea's English curriculum. Korean students spend almost no time to write in English in class. Almost every English textbooks in South Korea focus on reading and listening skill of English, barely speaking, but no writing. Of course, Listening, Reading, and Speaking are all important language skills to develop but result will be maximized when all skiils are developed in balance.

Also, I agree that some of today's English teachers are kind of outdated. Some teachers lacks pronounciation skills. They became an English teacher a long time ago, so they tends to lack adopting new trend of English education. Since today's world is so globalized, many young students has an opportunity to go abroad and study abroad. That is why some has dissatisfaction with their teacher. However, I believe that we do not have to fire these teacher because of their lack of speaking skill. As they are not good at speaking English, they might ace in other field of English language, for example, grammar and structure of English. It would be nice if one school has several English teachers with different strong fields.

After the 'MT' a.k.a 'Membership Training'

I went to Department of English Education Membership Training from Friday to Saturday.

It was a real fun, playing soccer and dodge ball with all freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduates and professors.
I think it was more mearningful because every professor participated in this.

I was able to meet professors that I don't take any courses of.

After playing sports, we had "Night of English Educationer."

Every participates of this Membership Training were provided chances to show their inner talent.

I danced with my friends along with the song "Rainism" by the famous Korean singer Rain.

It was so much difficult to learn this dance but after the show, I felt very proud of myself.

After the program ended, I felt exhausted and tired but I got to say It was worthy participating in.
