ICT week 4 - My Personality Factors that influence language learning

Current Skill : Reading academic textbooks is terribly slow

- Have you just begun your studies? As you learn more about your own subject, reading the textbooks will get easier. Are you using a dictionary sensibly? Can you guess or infer the meanings of words? Do you know about skimming and scanning strategies? An academic reading course might help you. On the Internet, the Reading Room offers special tips for reading English texts.

Motivation : I like to get to know people from other countries
- This is a good example of what has been called “integrative motivation”, ie, wanting to learn a language so that you can integrate easily into the target language group. It sounds as if you are a communicative and active type of learner, who likes to focus on oral skills.

Personality: I think that peoplewill laugh at theway I speak
- People vary a lot in their capacity to achieve a good pronunciation of a new language. Embarrassment and anxiety about this can often make things even worse. This often leads to avoidance of situations where you have to speak and so you rarely get the opportunity to practice. You need to look for situations or courses where you feel safe and less threatened. As you start to feel more comfortable, you will speak more and your pronunciation will gradually improve. And remember, many other people feel the same as you.
